Nafplio

History, romance, and the sea

Nafplio, one of the most romantic cities in Greece, is known for its preserved architecture, Venetian castles, and its history as the first capital of the modern Greek state. Located just a short distance from Athens, it is ideal both for a day trip and as a stop during your holidays in the Peloponnese.

Built along the Argolic Gulf, it became the first capital of modern Greece after the Greek War of Independence in 1821. It remains a favorite destination for couples and families, as well as for weekend getaways from Athens.

The elegant Old Town of Nafplio is a mosaic of narrow alleys, neoclassical mansions, and blooming squares, with visible traces of Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influence throughout the centuries. It was here that Greece’s first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated in 1831, and just two years later, in 1833, Otto of Bavaria was crowned as the first king of the modern Greek state.
